Glasgow North: Funky Contemporary Garden Design in Bearsden
Filed under Garden Design Portfolio SeriesJul 17
Welcome to another project article in our Garden Design Portfolio Series. This garden has been designed by Nicky Patterson and will be built by the team of garden designers and landscapers at GardenImprovements.com.This project comes from an area between Bearsden and Drumchapel in the (North) West End of Glasgow in Scotland where Verné A has commissioned this design for her small garden which was cramped and darkened by a large garage, was very damp and very drab.
Her brief insisted us:
- To provide an entertainment deck area over the base of the soon to be demolished garage base.
- The garden had to be funky and vibrant with an ‘outdoor nightclub’ style.
- Some raised beds
- Some degree of lawn but a provision that ensured dry feet when journeying through the space.
- She had an initial budget of £3-5K.
Since I was obligated to install a deck over the garage base (since this is where the sun stayed most of the day), it made sense to use this as the keystone of the design. I had an idea to use outdoor cube cushioned seats and a low coffee table for the furniture, and then built upon these shapes and dimesions throught the rest of the garden space incorporating a path, lawn, low and high planting areas.
Essentially the garden will be split into two areas by raised beds, being quite a long and narrow area this approach presented two ‘digestible’ chunks which further enforced the cubic form. Emerging from the access steps to the house is a silver granite sett path leading through a lawn, low-level gravel beds, the raised beds and into the second area.
This path leads to a decked platforn surrounded by grasses and funky architectural – easy maintenance. A black granite sett path, lays through the original silver one and leads the user around the deck to the gate at the back of the garden. This two-tonal approach offers some exciting contrast providing a vibrant environment in which to accessorise with colour through furniture and planting.
Height interest is offered through these raised beds and is further emphasised by use of multi level planting – accentuated with some ‘telegraph-pole’ like cypress trees.
The geometric shapes and clean contrasting colours of the materials the garden will have a unmistakably contemporary feel, perfect for chilled out afternoons and evenings with friends, family and wine!
We completed the build of this project in the summer of 2007 and sadly lost our photographs but plan to return and update you all with the completed project images!!
Kind regards
