An exciting garden design in the southside of Glasgow from designer Nicky Patterson from Clarkston based garden design and landscaping firm GardenImprovements.com
The Plan is to incorporate a circular theme based on the client’s own idea of having circular steps from the back doors: I have developed this throughout the space to produces an orbital series of elipsing circles to form each element in the garden design.
My initial ideas for the garden design were to compliment the shape of the plot – Robert didn’t want the space to be divided up in the manner that it had been previously and wanted to view the whole area from the vantage of the requested deck area. My use of diminishing circles accentuates the length of the garden certainly, but helps to lead the eye down and around the garden and take in the pleasure of the planting.
The cascade water feature pools into a rill which follows down into the reflective pool. The rill heightens the audio and visual qualities of the garden – and will also act as a handy wine and beer cooler!!
Richard and Karen E were looking for a lot of space for their little ones to run around while keeping plenty of room for entertaining; they also wanted to undertake the planting by themselves over a period of time, so take a look at our photos of the completed hard landscaping.

My initial idea was to provide a decked area outside of the French doors at the back of Dougie and Judith’s kitchen/living room, but had to play around with shapes and sizes until finding something that felt right. I began with a cubic theme to the garden but then felt on reflection that curves would suit Dougie and Judith’s sense of style more. Once confirmed the rest of the garden was structured around this circular deck which will be sunken to meet ground level.

Having read some of the many articles on the effects of the credit crunch on small businesses, I wonder how it will affect my small business and how other garden designers and landscapers around Glasgow, and indeed around the UK, will cope with the coming year.Read more ›
